8 Medical Conditions Detected by X-Rays

X-rays are widely ordered imaging tests by both general and specialist healthcare professionals for the diagnosis of various health issues. These tests are quick, non-invasive, and painless, sometimes involving the use of a contrasting medium for detailed evaluation. They help in visualising the inside structures, particularly the bones, of the affected, diseased, or damaged body part. But for clear capture of images, staying still is very important.

  1. Fractures of bones- Any crack or rupture of bone shows up in X-ray images as gaps or dark, lucent lines on the solid white bones.
  2. Lung infections and conditions- A lung filled with fluids, inflammation of the inside of the lungs, or lung infection shows up on X-rays as cloudy, white patches instead of the normal black.
  3. Cardiomegaly (heart enlargement)- This is the warning sign of congestive heart failure or cardiomyopathy, which shows up on chest X-ray image as a more globular or water-bottle-shaped cardiac silhouette.
  4. Abnormal growths in the breast, lung, and bone- Any unusual, benign growths or malignant tumors can be detected inside the breasts, lungs, or on the bone with X-ray images. The X-ray images typically have growths or tumors appearing as distinct, brighter-than-average light-gray or white spots.
  5. Arthritis and Osteoporosis- The cartilage loss and changes in the bone of the joints are detectable in joint X-rays as bone spurs, narrow joint spaces, increased bone density, and subchondral cysts in some cases. Whereas, the loss in density of bone, the brittle bones, or vertebral fractures can show up on special types of X-ray imaging as darker, radiolucent bones. These X-rays show the level of reduction in the density of the minerals of bones.
  6. Kidney stones- The stones that develop in the kidneys, ureter, and bladder can show up on the abdominal X-ray (KUB) as bright white or dense, opaque spots, as they are radiopaque.
  7. Dental decay- Dental X-rays can help check for cavities and even impacted teeth. The decayed portion is where the tooth structure has been demineralised and so appears as dark, radiolucent areas on X-ray images.
  8. Digestive blockages- Any obstructions inside the intestinal tracts or swallowed foreign objects can be spotted in the abdominal X-ray with or without the use of contrasting material like Barium.

Are Diagnostic X-rays Safe?

The X-ray machines used for diagnosing medical conditions involve the use of low-dose X- ray radiation, the amount that is safe for the dense tissue or organ under examination. But for those patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding must avoid X-rays. X-ray radiation can pose a risk of cancer by causing cellular changes only in areas highly sensitive to it, especially in children, if it's repeatedly done without precautions. Thankfully, there are radiation protection gears available that ensure no such risks.
