What is Newborn Screening?

It is a simple screening test done on a newborn baby within the first 72 hours of its birth. The primary target of this test is to detect earliest possible recognition of congenital metabolic disorders, which can be not just harmful and potentially fatal.

This Newborn Screening is a preventive pediatric screening service provided to all the neonates to assess the possibilities of genetic disorders in the area of "Inborn Errors of Metabolism". These errors, which are not harmful now, have all the potential to cause permanent neurological, cognitive, tactile and physical damage in the child. If such errors are detected in this newborn baby screening, they can be treated easily. Considering our country's health scenario, economic conditions and technology, neonatal screening is the need of the hour!

Neonatal screening enables to administrate treatment starting from the first weeks of life to reverse the prognosis. Early diagnosis and treatment correlate with a significant reduction in mortality and associated disabilities for those affected.

Labsystems Diagnostics' new NS496 DBS puncher is designed for automated punching of 3.2mm (1/8inch) discs from dried blood spot samples. Up to 4 plates can be handled at the same time.
