Trivitron Health Care announces signing of MoU with IIT, Madras
To set up “Trivitron Innovation Center”, India’s 1st Industry-Academic Partnership of its kind in
Medical Technology Space
Chennai, 27th May’10: Trivitron Health care, the largest Medical Technology Manufacturing Company of Indian origin inks a Memorandum of Understanding with IIT Madras to set up
“Trivitron Innovation Center”, a Center of Excellence for Biomedical Research & Development and Design in IIT, Madras to offer own design, innovative and cost effective medical technology solutions to India and other emerging markets.
Trivitron has been speaking the language of healthcare providers for over 13 years with a range of over 500 products for over 20 medical specialties and is the first to set up South Asia’s Medical Technology Park in India.
This step will make Trivitron’s dream come true to become a game changer by establishing its own design center and offering innovation, own designs and IPs in medical technology to the country and emerging markets in the world. The innovation center will fuel Trivitron’s goal to create a center of excellence to design and develop MT products for their own business needs and manufacturing and be a design and development partner to its Joint Venture partners and top medical technology players of the world. The center will focus on inventions in Medical Technology, invent new concepts, design unique products and obtain patents with an access to brilliant scientists and academicians in IIT campus.
IIT, Madras has an impeccable record of producing some of the world’s best talents in the fields of engineering design with application in various fields of Technology including advanced Bio Medical applications for Medical Technology Products. The innovation center will help IITians to bring commercially viable medical devices into the market through continuous interactions and inputs from Trivitron Engineering, manufacturing & support team and also an employment opportunity for students and project associates in Trivitron design and development centre on and off campus.
Indian Medical Technology market has been import dependent and more than 85% of products are still being imported due to lack of medical innovation and lack of coordinated efforts between medical & engineering institutes and medical technology manufacturers thus adding to soaring healthcare cost. And mostly, the cost is paid towards technology not frequently used in Indian healthcare setup.
In his speech, Dr. G. S. K. Velu, Managing Director, Trivitron Group of Companies said,
“Trivitron Innovation Center @ IIT Madras is going to be the first Physical Infrastructure of its kind in IIT campus for Design, Research & Development of Medical Devices & Equipments in India.” He added, “We are pleased to announce the alliance with the world renowned Engineering Institute, IIT Madras to set up
Trivitron Innovation Center in IIT Madras campus. Our main focus to set up the exclusive facility to conduct Research, Design and Develop processes to bring out cost effective Medical Technology products to cater to India and emerging markets in the world.”
“The center will be exclusively funded by Trivitron. In the phase I, the alliance is working to design and develop medical devices products in the area of Critical Care, Renal Care, Lab Diagnostics and Imaging Diagnostics”, Dr.Velu added.
On the occasion, Dr. M. S. Ananth, Director, IIT, Madras said, “Trivitron Innovation Center project will draw resources from all the core departments of IIT through its professors and students. The joint initiative will also help students to get a deeper insight in to the Medical Technology market and make them better prepared to become an expert Design and R&D engineers.” Prof. R. Krishna Kumar, Head, Department of Engineering Design, IIT Madras will be the coordinator of the center and will draw diverse talents & resources available within IIT.
Dr. Balakrishnan, an eminent Cardio-Thoracic Surgeon said, “
This tripartite initiative to create the Trivitron Innovation Center will be able to channelize and validate all biomedical research projects with closer interaction process between IIT Professors, Industry Experts and Eminent Doctors.” He added, “This center is also aimed to prevent brain drain of best engineering talent to the western country providing R&D atmosphere similar to what is available in the western countries to facilitate the original inventions from India.
Dr.Velu further added that apart from having the Innovation Center @ IIT Madras, Trivitron will also develop a more comprehensive center in its Trivitron Medical Technology Park at Sriperumbudur near Chennai for cross utilization and expansion. In due course, Trivitron Innovation Center @ IIT Madras will be transformed into a common platform for the MNCs and the Indian Medical Device manufacturers as an outsourced design and development center.
